Boda-boda rider sets himself ablaze, police officers to be investigated

Police are investigating some their officers after another boda-boda rider set himself ablaze at Kireka Police Station.

Over the weekend Emmanuel Kabanda set himself ablaze after his motorcycle Reg.no UDU 610H was impounded past 6:00 pm , a time when they are mandated to stop riding boda-bodas.

According to police Spokesperson, Fred Enanga, police officers in Kireka carried out an operation aimed at implementing the Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs) in place to control the spread of the deadly #Covid-19 pandemic. In the operation the impounded 10 Motorcycles and the owners were issued with tickets directing them to pay an unrevealed amount of money for violating the SOPs.

“In the process Kabanda decided to protest however, he was told to return the next day which he did. When he returned, he bought petrol at the nearby fuel station, poured it on his body and set himself ablaze,” Enanga said.

Enanga said in the process, the victim started crying for help. Police officers and other individuals responded and saved him.

“He is currently at Kiruddu hospital where he is receiving medical care.” He said adding that the he will be charged with attempted suicide upon recovery. Enanga said.

In tandem he said they are investigating a number of it officers over claims of extortion and bribery, a move that could have caused Kabanda’s suicidal incident.

He urged condemned the act saying this is not the end result and its officers will be brought to book if they are found guilty. This is the second incident involving a Boda-boda rider. The first being at Masaka police involving another rider who unfortunate passed on. Eagle Online understands that cases of extortion at  Kireka are rampant.
