DRC Insecurity: Regional Leaders Meet Today

The postponed regional leaders meeting initiated by Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi to discuss peace and security in the volatile eastern region of DRC is taking place today Wednesday, October 7,

The meeting is expected to bring together leaders from Rwanda, DR Congo, Uganda, Burundi and Angola to discuss peace, security, diplomatic and political relations, among others.

The meeting had been postponed after Burundi opted to pull out noting that it had issues to discuss with DR Congo.

However, DR Congo Foreign affairs Marie Tumba Nzeza on Monday travelled to Burundi where she met President Everiste Ndayishimiye.

According to the Burundi presidency, their discussions focused on the stabilization of eastern DRC and trade between the two countries.

“The technical preparatory meeting is happening as we speak. Ministers are set to meet via videoconference this afternoon and the Heads of State virtual summit is scheduled for Wednesday,” according to the ministry of foreign affairs.

President Felix Tshisekedi will chair the meeting from the Eastern Congo city of Goma where he is on 3-day visit.

Tshisekedi has in the last two years ignited a new momentum aimed at bolstering peace and security in the region.

This has seen a number military operations launched aimed at uprooting the over 200 rebel and militia groups of different nationalities operating in both South and North Kivu East Congo.
