Kampala Police Shoots Rape Suspect Dead for Attempting to Disarm Officers

Police in Old Kampala have shot and killed a rape suspect as he allegedly resisted arrest and attempted to disarm officers, who were effecting an arrest.

The suspect according is said to have raped a woman on Wednesday (21/10/2020) in Lugala, Rubaga Division, Kampala Capital City.

“The rape victim, whose name we will not disclose for privacy, narrated to the police her ordeal. She identified the suspect clearly,” said KMP deputy spokesperson SP Patrick Onyango

“The incident happened near a location where there are CCTV cameras. The detectives retrieved the footage and analysed it. Detectives identified the suspect using the CCTV footage and it was established that he was a private security guard at a garage near Kosovo junction.”

Onyango says this morning at around 0530hrs police officers went to arrest him, but that he resisted arrest and attempted to disarm a police officer.

“The officers discharged warning shots, but the suspect went ahead and attempted to grab a gun from one of the officers. The officer’s colleague fired bullets that killed the suspect,” said Onyango in a statement.

The deceased has been identified as Ali Ambayo, a resident of Lugala.

Meanwhile the officer who shot has been arrested and detained at Old Kampala Police Station as investigations continue.
