A select group of Uganda premier league clubs League clubs have championed a campaign dubbed “Wear Your Local Jersey” as a drive that will ensure local football stakeholders wholeheartedly support and build the Ugandan Football industry.
The launch took place on Thursday morning at the StarTimes Stadium, Lugogo, attracting seven representatives from different UPL clubs.
The “Wear Your Local Jersey” campaign was pioneered by Kampala Capital City Authority Football Club (KCCA FC) Chief Executive Officer Anisha Muhoozi.
She was flanked by Henry Mayeku (URA FC), Sula Kamoga (Wakiso Giants), Isaac Mwesigwa (Express FC), Lumu Fahad (CEO, Police FC), Bernardo Olupot (PRO, Sports Club Villa), Abdu Wasike (PRO, Vipers Sports Club) and FUFA deputy CEO in charge of football Humphrey Mandu.
This campaign has been elevated with a major objective of promoting the local football industry through urging Ugandans to support local football clubs and to “Buy Uganda, Build Uganda.”
The campaign will as well produce a collective voice with united Uganda football clubs that drive the same cause, generate revenue and grow the brand for Ugandan football through various stakeholders who proudly purchase and wear the local apparel.
“Brand in football is a key aspect in Uganda and it’s an aspect we have to take if we are develop the brand of football in Uganda. By wearing the local Jerseys, it implies that whatever you are buying will be going back to the clubs and some proceeds will go to social corporate responsibility,” said the KCCA FC CEO, Anisha Muhoozi.
Humphrey Mandu, who represented FUFA, applauded the initiative and is optimistic about engaging government authorities on ensuring that the cause is supported.
“As a Federation, we encourage this initiative and we call upon clubs to encourage their fans wear their Jerseys. We shall engage the government on protective measures, URA and other government authorities and we shall work closely with the clubs to ensure that all these streams are supported,” Mandu noted.
In these challenging times of the Covid-19 pandemic where the Local football industry has been brought to its knees, merchandise is one of the few ways through which clubs can generate funds and keep in touch with their supporters.
ChimpReports further understands that 5% of KCCA FC’s revenue from sales will go towards supporting a Corporate Social Responsibility activity at the beginning of 2020/21 Season.
