We are Organizing General Elections not ‘Scientific Elections’ – EC Spokesperson Paul Bukenya

The Spokesperson of Uganda’s Electoral Commission (EC) Paul Bukenya has today rallied local media to help him and demystify the notion that the body is organizing ‘scientific’ elections, something he said they are not aware of.

“I would like you to first of all to demystify what has come to be known as a scientific election. We have not talked about the scientific election as Electoral Commission because we are organizing general elections,” he said.

He made this call while addressing dignitaries at the swearing in ceremony of Uganda Parliamentary Press Association (UPPA) which was held on Friday October 30, 2020, in Kampala.

Speaking today, Bukenya pointed out that the continued usage of this term is complicating their efforts to sensitize voters ahead of the 2021 Presidential Elections, something he guessed could have been caused by campaign limitations in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“And up to now we have people reaching us, and saying we heard on the radio that you will do scientific elections, perhaps because of the approaches that have been taken by limited groups meeting together, small weddings, small funerals and the use of ‘scientific’ in that aspect. It has come into an election and it has confused people,” he hypothesized.

That said, he explained that there is nothing scientific about these elections stating that there is still some sort of physical interaction that cannot be overlooked pointing at the recently concluded Local Government and Parliamentary nominations.

“You physically present yourself with a small group not a procession. There is even contact because there is paper work that you bring in and present. Same with polling day, there will be ballot papers, we are not voting via the phone,” Bukenya further elaborated.

On the same note, it is understood that only 50 journalists will be accredited to cover the Presidential nominations that commence on November 2nd 2020.

“So my request for 150 media personalities was turned down to 30 national and twenty international,” Bukenya explicitly hinted.
