Live bullets and teargas on Sunday evening rocked Kabale Municipality as anti-riot police and UPDF clashed with the Forum for Democratic Change-FDC party Presidential flag bearer Patrick Oboi Amuriat and his supporters.

The security team led by the Kabale DPC Brian Ampaire and the head of Field Force Unit in Kigezi Region, Henry Kisembo cordoned off Rugarama junction on Kabale-Kisoro road denying Amuriat and his convoy from accessing Kigezi primary school hold a campaign rally.

Police fired teargas and live bullets in Kabale

Amuriat, who was a flanked by the FDC party secretary general Hon Nandala Mafabi and Rukungiri municipality MP-Roland Kaginda Mugume, arrived in Kabale town at 6:00pm coming from Kisoro district.

According to the Electoral Commission guidelines, campaigns should end at 6 pm.

Upon arrival in Kabale, DPC Ampaire told Amuriat that he couldn’t allow a campaign rally to start that late in the evening.

In the exchange that ensure, Amuriat and his team insisted on proceeding to the school playground to address voters, which compelled police to fire live bullets, and teargas around Esso and Bank lane for about 30 minutes to disperse them.

Amuriat later told journalists that security officials were biased. He said he would try to schedule another day to talk to his people in Kabale district.

Elly Maate the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson said that they couldn’t allow a campaign rally when it was beyond the required time. He added that if Amuriat harmonizes with the electoral commission to reschedule a campaign rally, they will welcome him.
