Ivan Bogere Crowned ‘Real Star of November’

Proline Football Club and Uganda Hippos (U-20) striker Ivan Bogere has clinched the Fortebet Real Star emerging as the best footballer for the previous month of November.

The awarding ceremony which was graced by the National Council of Sports Chairman DR. Donald Rukare and Real Star awards Executive Director Isaac Mukasa took place on Wednesday at Copper Chimney Restaurant in Lugogo.

To win the accolade, Bogere guided Uganda Hippos to the CECAFA U-20 Challenge Cup triumph in Arusha, Tanzania as well as qualifying the team to U-20 AFCON tournament in Mauritania having scored five goals in the championship.

He scored twice against Burundi during a group B match (Uganda 6-1 Burundi), netted a double against Kenya (Uganda 3-1 Kenya) on the semi-final and scored one as Uganda defeated Tanzania 4-1 to lift the title on Wednesday afternoon.

Bogere beat Vipers Sports Club defender and Captain Halid Lwaliwa, and Busoga United’s winger Ismail Mugulusi to the award.

Lwaliwa was part of the Uganda Cranes squad that played in the double-header against South Sudan in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, coming off the bench to score Uganda’s lone strike in the first leg at Kitende as the Cranes won 1-0.

Winger Mugulusi was also part of the winning Hippos squad in Tanzania for the CECAFA U20 Cup having assisted Kenneth Semakula as Uganda Hippos overcame Kenya by 3-1 at Black Rhino Academy on Monday this week.

Being away in Tanzania, Bogere’s award and cash were picked up by the mother, Oliver Nakyeyune who wiped tears of joy during her acknowledgement speech.

Elsewhere, Uganda National Men’s Basketball team (Silverbacks) captain Jimmy Enabu and long distance runner Phillip Kiplimo won in the Basketball and Athletics categories respectively.

Enabu helped the Silverbacks record two victories of a possible three against Cape Verde and Morocco in the 2021 AfroBasket qualifiers round one in Egypt beating US based Ishmael Wainwright and Opong Robinson to the gong.

In the Athletics category, Phillip Kiplimo won the accolade having clinched a gold medal in the NBC Tanzania Marathon with a time of 2:17.46 on Sunday.

He beat competition from first and second runners up Stephen Kissa and Doreen Chemutai to land the accolade.

Kissa grabbed a podium finish having finished third in the 2020 Airtel Delhi Marathon last Sunday while Chemutai won the Women’s Half Marathon with a time of 1:13.45 at the same event.
