The Uganda U-20 national football team known as the Hippos have been crowned champions of the regional 2020 CECAFA U-20 Challenge Cup following a resounding 4-1 victory over hosts Tanzania in the final on Wednesday afternoon.
Najib Yiga, Steven Sserwadda, Ivan Bogere and Aziz Kayondo were on target for the Hippos in a match played at the Black Rhino Academy sports stadium in Karatu.
Hamisi Sulimani scored for Tanzania Ngorongoro Heroes from the penalty spot.
The journey to victory was masterminded by the team head coach Morley Byekwaso and goalkeeping coach Kiggundu Billy after assistant coach Simeon Masaba didn’t travel with the team.
Coming into the final, both Uganda and Tanzania qualified for the 2021 Africa U-20 Nations Cup. It is the first time Uganda have qualified for the U20 AFCON competition. The 2021 edition will be hosted in Mauritania.
South Sudan managed to beat Kenya 2-1 to finish third and win bronze.
