The Mulago Specialized Women and Neonatal Hospital was commissioned in 2018 and the facility has, since its inception, been serving thousands of people both from around the city, the various regions of the country and others from the neighbouring countries.

Dr Diana Atwine, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health has today highlighted the numerous achievements of the health facility including the recent successful surgery of the separation of co-joined twins who are now in a stable condition and are still under care.

She said that the hospital is now a “super specialized facility” capable of carrying out highly specialized medical procedures.

“The recent achievements include; separation of the conjoined twins, heart surgeries, retina replacement, and other organ transplants including infertility treatment,” Dr. Atwine said.

“We have introduced retina replacement. We are introducing organ transplants. The Heart Institute has been conducting surgeries that were initially conducted abroad. Many ladies used to travel for In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) but now these services are available at Mulago,” she added.

Atwine revealed that a total of 186 Health Centre IIs have been upgraded to Health Centre IIIs in the last two financial years and that 108 Health Centre IIs are currently under upgrade this FY 2020/21.

She further pointed out that the construction of Kayunga and Yumbe hospitals has been completed and the facilities are undergoing installation of equipment. The two hospitals will soon be upgraded to Regional Referral Hospitals.

“The construction of Health Centre IIIs in the 134 sub-counties that lack health facilities will commence once the upgrades are complete. This is to ensure that there is a health facility within a 5km distance,” she said.
