A section of leaders from various opposition political parties in Kabale district have today stormed the office of the Kabale District Police Commander Brian Ampaire demanding the release of the Kabale district National Unity Platform Coordinator.
Derrick Katebire Mugyesera was yesterday morning arrested by Kabale Police while campaigning along Garage street in Kabale.
Katebire is contesting for district councillor Central division in Kabale municipality on the NUP ticket.
DPC Ampaire said Katebire had been arrested after the Police intelligence team discovered that Katebire was organising a demonstration accusing the DPC and the Kabale RDC Darius Nandinda of reportedly vandalizing and confiscating NUP posters in Kabale municipality.
This morning a group opposition leaders stormed the DPC’s office demanding for Katebire’s release.
These included Gideon Tumwesigye the Kabale district FDC Vice Chairperson, Wilkens Arineitwe the Kabale district UPC Chairperson, Martin Rumanzi the Rukiga district UPC Chairperson, Julius Tuturyebwa the Kabale district FDC general secretary, Conrad Kimonge the Kabale district FDC Youths Chairperson among others.
The group moved to the office of the DPC asked why their colleague had been detained.
Ampaire however insisted that Katebire will remain in detention and arraigned in courts of law to answer to charges of inciting violence and doing an act likely to spread Covid 19.
Katebire is also facing similar charges in the Kabale magistrate’s court.
He was on 3rd November this year arrested by Police in Kabale for doing an act likely to spread Covid 19.
He was later released on 5th November after he was granted bail by the Kabale grade one magistrate Isaac Rukundo.
