Livewire Oscar Mawa’s late strike lifted Uganda Cubs over a resilient Djibouti (1-0) to qualify for the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco.

Mawa’s goal came after 89 minutes during semi-final duel of the CECAFA U-17 championship at Umuganda stadium in Rwanda on Sunday afternoon.

The KCCA Soccer Academy player had his 24th minute goal canceled for an off-side before having his shot blocked moments after.

In the 44th minute, Mawa missed a free header off Issa Bugembe’s delivery before Samir Mudiba missed a free header from a curling corner kick off Ibrahim Juma at the stroke of halftime.

Goalkeeper Osman Youssouf later made a brilliant save to punch Mudiba’s attempt over the cross bar while Travis Mutyaba had his close range effort go wide.

With a minute to the final whistle, Hassan Mubiru released a defense splitting pass through Djibouti’s backline to meet Mawa who slotted home past goalkeeper Osman.

The hard fought win inspires Uganda Cubs to the CECAFA U-17 final as well as qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations tournament scheduled for next year in Morocco.

Uganda Cubs will play the final with the winner between Tanzania and Ethiopia who will face off in the other second semi-final clash.
