Atiak Sugar Factory Loses Over 60% of Plantation to Fire

1 Mins read

Fire has reportedly burnt over 60 percent of Atiak Sugar plantation in Amuru district

The Fire that started last week, has been ravaging acres of the sugar plantation with the Police fire brigade fighting with little success to contain the flames.

Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Aswa regional Police spokesperson, described the fire outbreak as the worst ever recorded.

Okema attributed the rapid spread to narrow fire lines that can’t allow Police fire trucks to move in fast.

He recommended that Management of Atiak Sugar should create bigger fire lines of between between 10 to12 meters to make work easier for the fire martials.

The police is also still chasing leads for the source of the fire and no one  has been arrested.

It is believed that the fire started from  burning trees before being blown into the plantation by wind.

Atiak Sugar is co-owned by businesswoman Dr. Amina Hersi and government of Uganda and has faced a number of fire outbreaks over the years.
