Kampala: Over 100 Arrested In New Years Sting Operations

Kampala Metropolitan Police is holding 105 suspects who were arrested on New year’s day in sting operations.

The suspects were picked from various city bars that were reportedly operating behind closed doors.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Patrick Onyango however said ushering in the new year and ending the old year  celebrations went on peacefully in most parts of Kampala Metropolitan area.

According to him, this was due to the joint deployment of security agencies led by Police, UPDF LDU and intelligence agencies.

“The intelligence agencies were providing us with details that we were acting on to see that we Police the celebration peacefully. We were doing this all on motorized, foot patrol and others were stationary while several were on stand by to respond to any incident but the celebration was generally peaceful and we didn’t register any major incidents,” Onyango said in a statement on Friday.

However, security also  registered some uncontrollable incidents. For instance in Nabudere zone, Kisenyi 1in kampala central  a man identified as Najib was electrocuted when he got into contact with the electricity and he died instantly. His body was taken to city mortuary in Mulago for postmoterm.

In Wandegeya there was a fire outbreak at inter service power along Lumumba avenue. This according to Police started at about 6am on third floor but fortunately the building has fire fighting systems and fire fighting teams responded immidiately.

“There was no too much damage caused to the building and no injuries registered but minor damage to the building,” Onyango said.

A minor accident happened in Wakiso where a motorcyclist was knocked and died instantly. Also a hit and run accident happened at Kigunga trading centre in Mukono where unidentified rider of motorcycle UEV 152H was knocked by unidentified vehicle and the cyclist died.

“We are using our cameras to trace for the unidentified vehicle that knocked the cyclist,” said police.
