Mukono: Police Officer Shoots Man Dead while Enforcing Curfew

Police in Mukono district is holding one of their own officers for shooting dead one person and injuring two others while enforcing curfew guidelines.

The incident took place on Saturday night at about 9 pm at Kabembe trading centre in Mukono during a security night patrol.

According to Police, three officers including the suspected officer identified as Gerald Agaba, arrived at the said trading centre and ordered the people to close their businesses and go home.

However, the deputy spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police ASP Luke Owoyesigire said, some resident traders instead started insulting the officers.

“One of the persons identified as Nsubuga who sells second hand clothes started insulting the policemen while inciting his colleagues to attack them. This annoyed Agaba discharged a bullet which killed one person and injured others,” said Owoyesigire.

The deceased was identified as Nsejje, 23, a local chapatti maker while the injured are Jimmy Osubo and Moses Mubiru. One of them sustained an injury in the arm while another one’s leg was shot.

Owoyesigire revealed that the suspected officer was immediately arrested and detained at Nagalama police while the body of the deceased and injured persons were rushed to Nagalama hospital.

The deceased’s relatives said he had left home to go and demand payment from one of his customers who owed him Shs 1000.

Meanwhile, eye witnesses said the suspected officer was drunk at the time of the incident because “there was nothing major that would justify the shooting.”
