Uganda Hippos on Saturday played to a 1-1 draw with Uganda Premier League side URA FC during their third friendly match prior to the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Mauritania.
A Derrick Kakooza late strike (85′) cancelled out URA FC forward Steven Mukwala’s halftime goal (42′) as both sides shared the spoils at the MTN Omondi stadium in Lugogo.
Uganda felt pleased with his players’ response and expects to better their winning mentality.
“We have finished our second last friendly game and the boys have responded well so we are still trying some players because I have been rotating them from their positions identifying out who can play better and test their winning mentality. So all in all, the friendly was so good and I think we are going to focus on the team which will bring results in the AFCON tournament when playing the last practice match against Vipers Sports Club on Sunday,” Hippos coach Morley Byekwaso said after the match.
The Hippos defeated KCCA FC 1-2 and 3-4 in their opening two games and will play their final test match against Vipers Sports Club on Sunday morning before naming the final 25-man traveling squad.
Meanwhile, Uganda Hippos will participate in the pre-AFCON mini tournament (Uganda, Tanzania and Namibia) scheduled to take place between 1st – 10th February in Dar es salaam, Tanzania.
Uganda was placed in Group A of the AFCON U20 Tournament alongside the hosts Mauritania, Cameroon and Mozambique. The tournament will take place from 14th February to 6th March in Mauritania.
