Uganda Hippos suffered a 5-3 defeat to Tanzania during a friendly played at the Chamazi Sports Complex in Dar es Salaam on Saturday evening.

Tanzania went into an early lead after 13 minutes from a penalty kick scored by Abdul Suleiman and later doubled their lead three minutes later through Captain Kelvin John.

Derrick Kakooza pulled one back for the Hippos with a well taken strike from outside the box in the 19th minute.

Forward Ivan Bogere drew matters level for the Hippos six minutes later as four goals were scored in a space of 12 minutes giving a true reflection of a fast paced attacking game.

From recess, Abdul Suleiman restored Tanzania’s lead before substitute Sam Ssenyonjo squared the scores in the 73rd minute with a powerful header.

With 15 minutes left on the clock, Kassim Shaban netted the fourth for Tanzania and Abdul Suleiman completed his hattrick with a spot kick in the 90th minute.

“As I had said before, we are not looking at the results from these practice matches. We majorly test our players in match situations, find our weaknesses and solve them before the final tournament. It has been a good game and we have learnt a lot from our opponents Tanzania. It was so hard to beat them the third time in two months,” Uganda Hippos gaffer Morley Byekwaso noted in a post match interview.

The Hippos had defeated Tanzania 2-1 in their first friendly as they prepare for the forthcoming U20 Africa Cup of Nations tournament due to take place in Mauritania between 14th February to 6th March.

Uganda Hippos will travel to Mauritania on Wednesday 10th February for the tournament and will play the first match of Group A on 15th February against COSAFA Champions Mozambique.

The Hippos will play Mauritania on 18th February before meeting with Cameroon on 20th February.
