• Vipers SC 1-0 UPDF FC
Striker Yunus Sentamu’s late header was enough to guide Vipers Sports Club to a 1-0 victory over UPDF FC in the Uganda Premier League on Saturday at the St Mary’s Stadium.
Sentamu jumped high to head in a Joseph Dhata’s throw in past UPDF FC custodian Yusuf Wasswa with only five minutes to the final whistle.
The January signing has now scored three goals in three matches for the Venoms since his return to Kitende (scored brace in 7-0 win against MYDA) last week.
UPDF’s Robert Esseru received the first caution of the game for tripping forward Allan Kayiwa before Sam Kintu’s efforts off Paul Willa’s header went inches from the cross bar.
Vipers were forced to an early substitution after 36 minutes when Joseph Dhata replaced Dennis Mwemezi before Joseph Vuni and Hussein Zzinda went on to force reflex saves from Vipers’ goalkeeper Dennis Kiggundu.
At the stroke of halftime, the Venoms called for the second change with Allan Kayiwa paving way for midfielder David Bagoole while UPDF’s Ruben Kabuye replaced Robert Eseru moments after the restart.
On the 76th minute mark, UPDF FC was reduced to ten players when center referee Ronald Madanda sent off defender Isa Mubiru for a second bookable offense on left back Disan Galiwango.
Sentamu who had earlier headed Ibrahim Oriti’s cross over the bar stood heroic after nodding home a Dhata throw in from the right wing past goalkeeper Yusuf Wasswa.
The visitors narrowly drew matters level towards the climax but Vipers’ old boy Davis Kasirye missed a glorious chance as he shot wide a Ruben Kabuye cross.
The slim win took the Venoms to the top of the 16-team log on 14 points sending Police to second while UPDF FC remains 3rd on 12 points.
