Over 2 dozen fresh bean dealers from Ndorwa west on Tuesday stormed Kabale police station demanding compensation over their impounded beans.
The traders claim that Police on Monday at around 8pm impounded their Fuso registration number UBH 390A that was carrying over 250 sacks of bean pods to Kampala.
On Tuesday morning they say, they found that most of the beans in the bags had started rotting.
Police is said to have suspected that the vehicle was carrying banned skin products known as Caro Light cream from Rwanda.
The traders under the Kahungye -Buramba- Ryakarimira fresh foods association now want police to compensate them for their damaged products, since police impounded the truck without verifying their intelligence.
Ian Byaruhanga, the head of the association says the damaged goods are worth Shs 30 Million.
According to the traders, the truck was first checked at the Katuna Border Town check point and released; but they reached in Kabale town it was impounded again and taken to the station.
Elly Maate the Kigezi Regional Police says the vehicle was impounded after getting intelligence information that it was carrying a contraband, but later it the morning it was found to be clean.
Maate says however, that police are not going to take responsibility of the damaged beans, being that the vehicle was even travelling during curfew time.
