Prominent Ugandan lawyer, Bob Kasango, is dead.
Reports indicate Kasango succumbed to heart failure at Luzira Prison on Saturday night.
Kasango was in 2018 sentenced to 16 years in jail over for theft of sh15 billion meant for pensioners.
At the time of death, Kasango was still serving his jail term.
Kasango had heart complications which kept him in and out of hospital.
The deceased was a co-founder of The Independent publication and also ran a city law firm.
Journalist Andrew Mwenda, confirmed the death of his close associate.
“He just died,” Mwenda told ChimpReports at 10:00pm.
Mwenda said Kasango was pronounced dead at “Murchison Bay Hospital inside Luzira Prison.”
Prisons boss Johnson Byabashaija also confirmed the development to this website.
”True. He died in our Murchison Bay Hospital this evening,” said Byabashaija.
Asked about the cause of death, Byabashaija responded: “Heart issues. But death in custody is a police case. They have to do a postmortem.”
Kasango’s sentence was due to expire December 20, 2034.
With good behaviour, the earliest possible date of discharge would have been August, 31, 2029, according to prison officials.
This is a developing story.
