Tanzanian President John Pombe Magufuli has died.
Magufuli died on Wednesday evening according to officials in the neighbouring country.
The country’s Vice President Mrs Samia Suluhu confirmed the shocking development in a televised announcement.
Suluhu said President Magufuli had passed away in hospital in Dar es Salaam where he was getting treatment.
The president, she said, had succumbed to heart complications, having been admitted on March 6th.
Magufuli was aged 61.
He becomes the second East African Head of State to die in office in less than a year.
In June last year, Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza succumbed to Covid19.
Magufuli ‘s death follows days of speculation and anxiety in Tanzania after he disappeared from the public scene.
There were unconfirmed reports that he had been hospitalized in Nairobi with Covid19.
Others speculated that he had been secretary flown to India for treatment.
Maguufuli had served as Tanzanian 5th President since 2015.
Mrs Suluhu will now take charge of the country until a new leader is elected. She will be East Africa’s first ever female President.
