Stanbic Uganda Cup | First leg
• SC Villa 0-1 Ndejje University
Brian Ssali was the hero as 10-man Ndejje University held nerves for a win against Sports Club Villa in the Uganda Cup round of 32 at Bombo barracks playground.
The forward stroke towards recess and the visitors held on for first leg advantage despite Edgar Luzige’s second half send off that left the students with a man down on Monday.
Ndejje University proved a powerful side in the opening stanza of the physical game taking advantage of SC Villa’s shrinking avenue from the right wing to venture threatening attacks going forward.
The students broke Sports Club Villa’s resilience after 37 minutes when target man Brian Ssali nodded home a magical glancing header off George Akena’s inswinging cross from the right flank.
SC Villa could have drawn matters level in just seconds but Ndejje University’s Martin Owalamu made a priceless clearance to deny Derrick Ndahiro’s goal bound shot.
Midfielder Lugezi found himself in a scoring position to double the visitors’ advantage but his chipped ball over goalkeeper Saidi Keni went over the cross bar as the visitors took a 0-1 lead at halftime.
After introducing Abdallah Salim and Nicholas Kabonge prior to second half commencement, SC Villa seemed a better side, launching relentless attacks that kept Ndejje University on the receiving end.
Ronald Sekiganda and Fred Agandu blasted distant powerful shots in the sky while Villa’s custodian Saidi kept out Wasswa Jimmy’s tap in from point blank as the game approached the hour mark.
In the 66th minute, Ndejje University were reduced to ten men when center referee Ali Sabira displayed a red card to midfielder Nicholas Luzige off a second bookable offense.
SC Villa banked on the numerical advantage to pile more pressure going forward but Ndejje resorted to time wasting tactics, cooling off the immense pressure while defenders Solomon Akodi and Ronald Owiny played a pivotal role in the backline.
Both sides will faceoff in the second leg scheduled for Sunday 11th April at the Arena of Visions in Ndejje where the aggregate winner will advance to the round of 16.
