President Yoweri Museveni on Thursday addressed the elected Members of Parliament on the National Resistance Movement ticket at Kyannkwanzi National Leadership Training Institute.
Museveni, who is also the Chairman of NRM, told the MPs elect that their five years mission should be to get the population out of poverty and facilitate prosperity.
“I congratulate you upon your victories. I want to let you know that leadership is not by accident and you cannot do things by chance but must know the desires of your people, help them achieve it and they will treasure you,” said Museveni.
The president said leadership should be premised on the three strata of mission, principles and strategy to create solutions.
“What is the mission of a leader? What principles and strategies do you follow to achieve? Your predecessors think leadership is public relations,” said Museveni.
Adding: “Attending burials, being in the church the whole day even when you have no role there, is not leadership because our people are looking for solutions not just PR (public relations).”
The President stressed that poverty and its associated indicators of ignorance, bad housing and others should be dealt with by the leaders in close working relationships with the population.
“Our people must get out of poverty. Things like ignorance, bad housing and all the poverty indicators should be history and our people to live a prosperous life,” he said.
He noted that there are available avenues to address the bottlenecks in the society and they only need to be harnessed.
“Fortunately, we have the means to achieve prosperity and strategic security. Let us use strategic leadership to help our people and I am going to discuss with you the strategy,” said Museveni.
