In an effort to find solutions to the recurrent floods in Teso region, the technical team from the Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE) and Operation Wealth Creation held meetings in Gulu district in February 2021 in which it resolved to front “all-propose workable measures.”
The joint technical team comprising of officials from the MWE, District Local Government Authority, Sub-county local authority and locals within the flood prone villages subsequently undertook preliminary site assessment on the proposed sites by District Water Officers.
“The flood mitigation intervention is short term in nature in form of construction of six (6) valley tanks,” officials from the Ministry said.
Adding; “Three will be in Katakwi District, one in Amuria District and two in Kapelebyong District. Each valley tank will measure to a capacity of 30,000,000 liters.”
The Ministry of Water and Environment is in the advanced stages to start construction works of the of two valley tanks in Kapelebyong and Odiding sub counties in Kapelebyong district. This will be implemented by Water for Production Regional Centre-East.
The flood mitigation move will be followed by water production projects like Small-Scale Irrigation (SSI) systems and dams across the Country to mitigate effects of climate change and improve livelihoods of beneficiary communities.
