CAF Champions League | Quarter-final
• Al Ahly 2-0 Mamelodi Sundowns
Al Ahly on Saturday evening matched out of Al Salam stadium with the advantage after a 2-0 victory over continental giants Mamelodi Sundowns in the first leg of CAF Champions League quarter-final.
Mohamed Taher and Salah Mohsen goals in either stanza ensured Pitso Mosimane claimed first leg bragging rights over his former paymasters in Cairo.
Mamelodi Sundowns started the game brightly and organized constant attacks going forward only to be let down by the poor finishing in the final third of Al Ahly.
The Brazilians had the first attempt through Gift Motupa who collected an inch-perfect delivery from Aubrey Modiba before his shot on goal rattled the woodwork.
Al Ahly broke the deadlock after 23 minutes through Mohamed Taher who received a diagonal pass on the left before bending a stunner in the top corner of the net past former Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Dennis Onyango Masinde.
Mamelodi Sundowns was close to restoring parity after the break when Mosa Lebosa header off a corner was stopped by Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohammed El Shenawy. The custodian would later parry away Thapelo Morena’s cross-like shot.
In the 89th minute, Salah Mohsen pounced on a costly howler by goalkeeper Dennis Onyango to double the lead for the Egyptian Red Devils. Sundowns will look forward to making amends next weekend at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe stadium in South Africa.
