It’s good news for the Ugandan music industry as a new package is set to be dropped for it to enjoy.

News reaching our desk is that royalties to artistes from all members of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) have resumed for the content that they broadcast across their platforms.

This is subject to a timely alignment being done at UPRS in accordance with its legal mandate and organizational structure as licensed by URSB just like we were doing in the past.

The revamp will be effective from July, 1, 2021.

This was concluded in a successful engagement on Thursday, June 17, 2021, comprising of officials from the UPRS (Uganda Performing Right Society), URSB (Uganda Registration Services Bureau), UNCC (Uganda National Cultural Center), UCF (Uganda Cultural Forum), and UCC (Uganda Communications Commission).

The sitting of the bodies was in the spirit of supporting Uganda’s Arts and Creative Industry.

It also saw Gen. Salim Saleh, the Chief Coordinator of Operation Wealth Creation, and Kin Kariisa, Chairman of the National Association of Broadcasters Executive attend.

UCC is expected to issue a circular to all Broadcasters communicating this understanding and goodwill from the stakeholders in the spirit of promoting their own and supporting the artistes.

UPRS (Uganda Performing Right Society), URSB (Uganda Registration Services Bureau), UNCC (Uganda National Cultural Center), UCF (Uganda Cultural Forum), and UCC (Uganda Communications Commission) in the spirit of supporting Uganda’s Arts and Creative Industry, this morning, Kin Kariisa as Chairman of the National Association of Broadcasters Executive had a meeting with Gen. Salim Saleh, the Chief Coordinator of Operation Wealth Creation, on what has been such a productive engagement.

July 1st has been agreed to be the day that royalties to artistes will resume being paid by all our NAB members for the content that we broadcast across all our platforms, subject to a timely alignment being done at UPRS in accordance with its legal mandate and organizational structure as licensed by URSB just like we were doing in the past.

UCC shall issue a circular to all Broadcasters communicating this understanding and goodwill from the stakeholders in the spirit of promoting our own and supporting the artistes. I am hopeful that the Kilometers travelled today, on top of all the efforts and sacrifices put together to make this meeting possible in these times, will not be in vain. The artistes, just like the other sectors, are key to our economy and deserve to earn from their sweat

The National Association of Broadcasters, Uganda, is the voice for the nation’s radio and television broadcasters. As the premier association for broadcasters, NAB advances the interests of our members in government, business sector and country at large.

We will keep you posted
