Two Teams Depart for Africa Tennis Championships

Uganda will have two teams represent in the Davis Cup in Congo Brazzaville and the Africa Junior Teams Championships (Junior Davis Cup Qualifiers) in Cairo – Egypt.

The two tournaments will run from Monday 21st to Saturday 26th when the team competitions climax.

John Oduke will captain the five-man team for Davis Cup that has ten participating countries. The squad also comprises of Simon Ayella, Boris Baguma, Frank Tayebwa and Edward Birungi.

Uganda was pitted in group A alongside Namibia, Botswana, Angola and hosts Congo. Group B has Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Gabon, Senegal and Nigeria.

In the Junior category, Edward Odockcen has been handed the captaincy role to lead Troy Zziwa (14 years), Trevor Kazibwe (16 years) and Allan Otto (14 years) in the Africa Junior Teams championships.

“Zziwa and Otto were part of the Africa Junior Championship held in 2019 in Morocco. It is good to see that they are making progress; playing at an advanced level. Also, Zziwa and Kazibwe participated in the Africa Junior Championship in Tunisia on clay court in 2019,” Odockcen noted.

He added, “To see them qualifying for a such Africa Junior Teams’ Championships means that they have made a lot of progress. The boys are fit, they have been working hard. I believe they are going to put up a very good performance.”

Uganda qualified for the African Junior Teams continental showpiece through the Zonals that were held in early 2020.

The U14 event will be considered as a Grade C Tournament. ITF/CAT ranking points will be allocated to the participating players as follows:

1. Victories in Singles during Pool Matches:

• Player N° 1: 250 points for each single match won.
• Player N° 2: 150 points for each match won

2. Victories in Doubles during Pool Matches:

• 100 points per player for each double match
