The Anti-corruption Court in Kampala has Wednesday convicted and sentenced a Nursing Assistant attached to  Bufunda Health center III in Ibanda district for abuse of office and theft of government drugs.

The nurse identified as Nuhu Kazibwe was charged by the Inspectorate of Government with Abuse of office contrary to section 254(1) and 261 of the penal code Act.

Kazibwe was arrested recently in an operation aimed at cracking down theft of government drugs.

He pleaded guilty to stealing government drugs worth 7 million Uganda shillings and was fined 2 million shillings.

On the second count, Kazibwe was sentenced to six months imprisonment.

However, according to the law, “A person who is convicted of an offense under section 2,4,11 and 25 shall be disqualified from holding a public office for a period of 10 years from his/ her conviction.”

Basing on the clause, the Deputy Inspectorate of Government, Mariam Wangadya, has directed for the immediate dismal of Nuhu Kazibwe from public service.

This follows other convictions by the Anti-corruption Court of corrupt health workers who have been arrested in the ongoing operations to crackdown the drug thieving cartel in the health sector.

National Medical Stores in joint operation with security services and the State House Anti-Corruption Unit have in recent days intensified operations in which several people found in possession of Government drugs were arrested.
