A police officer at the rank of special police constable (SPC) in Luweero District on Wednesday succumbed to knife wounds after being stabbed by a colleague at a checkpoint for reportedly defying presidential directives put in place to contain the spread of Covid-19.

SPC Kasimu Luyinda, who is attached to Zirobwe Police Station, was reportedly stabbed by an officer at Kiziiri security checkpoint when he refused to heed to head to directives to stop. Luyinda was riding a motorcycle when he was stopped by fellow officers at around 1pm in the afternoon.

He was rushed to Bugema University Health Centre bleeding profusely but he died moments later.

Witnesses said a police officer identified as Nichoals Muloni stabbed SPC Luyinda with a bayonet which was fixed on his gun. “It is unfortunate that after the police officers injured him, they never came to his rescue yet he collapsed just about 200 meters away from the checkpoint,” Ms Margaret Nabadda, a witness, said.

Luweero Acting DPC Mr Patrick Maikula regretted the incident and said all the officers at the checkpoint have been arrested but that the wanted officer, Muloni, is on the run.

Luweero District LC5 Chairperson, Mr Erasto Kibirango who rushed to the scene condemned the incident.

“We need a clear report on the incident from the police regarding the death of Kasimu Luyinda. When the officer hit the cyclist with the sharp end of the gun, he was left struggling and bleeding. They never bothered to help him as responsible persons. Now one of the officer accused of injuring and possibly causing death has disappeared. The brutal acts by the police should be condemned. The responsible officers should be held accountable,” he said.
