The CECAFA U-23 Challenge Cup tournament has been pushed to Saturday 17th July, 2021 in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia(kickoff), the organizing committee has announced.
The cup was earlier slated to start on Saturday July 3rd – 18th 2021. However, following a meeting attended by seven General Secretaries from CECAFA Member Associations today via zoom, it has been decided that the competition is postponed by two weeks.
“The change was necessitated by some of the Member Associations having their countries go into lockdown due to COVID- 19 and are struggling to get government approval to travel to the event with Uganda inclusive,” the statement from Cecafa Executive Director, Auka Gecheo read in part.
“The change was also made because the South Sudan technical bench and some of their players are currently being quarantined in Doha, Qatar after attending the Arab FIFA Cup and will only travel on the 7th of July, while the League in Tanzania is also still ongoing and will be completed on 18th July 2021 with some players only being available to travel after it is complete,” Gecheo added.
Last week, the draws for this year’s CECAFA senior challenge cup competition were postponed under unclear circumstances. They were scheduled to be held on Friday, June 25 via zoom but will now be held this week.
Uganda are the defending champions after they beat Eritrea 3-0 during the 2019 finals of the championship held at the MTN Omondi stadium, Lugogo to clinch a 15th title.
