Loughborough Lightning 49-32 Team Bath Netball
She Cranes goal shooter Mary Nuba Cholhok helped her Loughborough Lightning side win their first Vitality Netball Superleague title at the Copper Box Arena on Sunday evening.
Loughborough Lightning broke the Superleague title jinx after beating the most decorated Team, Bath Netball 49-32 during the 2021 grand final that had 1000 spectators.
Sara Francis-Bayman’s side had previously lost three finals in 2008, 2017 and 2018 but had to put the poor record aside to set new records. Loughborough commanded a 22-14 lead at the interval after (11-7) successive leads in the opening two quarters.
Despite Team Bath Netball’s resilience in the third quarter, Loughborough Lightning remained composed and accurate in the fourth quarter to end their 15-year wait for a first Superleague title.
“We wanted to do it for the club, we’ve never done it before. The girls who have been here for years and the coaches, we’ve made history for Loughborough,” said Loughborough’s captain Beth Cobden who was named player of the season.
Cobden gained 44 turnovers and 24 interceptions for Loughborough Lightning to finish the regular season fifth in the league on deflections (56).
Mary Nuba was the top goal shooter after finishing the season with 772 goals and a shot success rate of 88%. She finished 122 goals clear of second-placed Joyce Mvula of Manchester Thunder.
