The Women’s national basketball team (Gazelles) won’t feature in the 2021 FIBA AfroBasket qualifiers, the Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA) has confirmed.

The Gazelles had confirmed participation in the Zone Five championship earmarked for July 12-17 2021 in Kigali, Rwanda before opting out.

FUFA president Nasser Sserunjogi attributed the decision to financial constraints.

“The Federation of Uganda Basketball Association has unfortunately made a painful decision to withdraw it’s participation from the AfroBasket qualifiers. This decision has been reached at after failing to get the much needed financial support from the government.”

“It is every athlete’s dream to compete at a continental championship like the AfroBasket and it is diplorable that Uganda will not take part in this year’s qualifiers,” read the statement from FUBA.

FUBA had asked the National Council of Sports (NCS) for about USD 60,000 to cater for the team at the Zonal qualifiers.
